Inside The Tudor Painting - The Ambassadors

Artist: Hans Holbein the Younger. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ambassadors_%28Holbein%29

His important and indifferent gaze set the scene for the painting. A bushy beard hung pompously from his pointed chin. Excellent and extravagant, the locket of the fur puff coated man glinted and gleamed on his silky undercoat, showing off his exquisite taste in fashion and wealth. Hiding a clove of curly and fringy hair, a carefully perched hat sat on his high cheekboned head, shining with inky blackness expressed all over himself. His shoulder pouches puffed out, round as a black and white apple. Pink under layers flashed his riches and complimented the already elegant colours of his chosen outfit. His telescope glittered in the lamp that was flooding the room with glorious light. His other hand was leaning casually on a shelf in front of the curtains.

The shelf showcased a wide variety on their superb successes and achievements. The ocean blue globe signified their underwater exploits and the wooden instruments next to it expressed their astronomical excellence. The sleek Persian fur rug that they were sitting on was undoubtedly an extremely expensive piece, telling observers that they have been to wealthy places like those. Underneath, an assortment of geological collections shimmered on the bottom shelf. The earth: they had travelled the world. The lute: they had explored musical culture. The book: a journal of their global excellence. These were all extraordinary feats that both men had achieved together.

The other man had exhausted and gloomy eyes, but otherwise similar to his companion with the same cool and stony look. He was in contrast a much humbler and less flashy type of person. He donned a modest brown lynx fur coat and again the same pointed hat. But even so, the silky cloak couldn’t be mistaken for a filthy peasant’s clothing. Fur was extremely expensive in the Tudor era. Less exquisite in many ways was also his beard. It was much less bold and neatly trimmed, keeping close to his U-shaped chin.
